A Northern Light

A Northern Light, by Jennifer Donnelly, copyright 2003 by Harcourt Children’s Books

This is a beautiful book about a young girl who decides to be true to herself and her own goals, and who strikes out for a new life as a writer.

Set in the Adirondacks, it is told around the events of a famous classic of American literature, Theodore Dreiser’s An American Tragedy. His story was based on fact, and Donnelly’s story is based on those facts and stories of her grandmother.

The main character, Mattie Gokey, is one of four daughters of a French-Canadian logger and his dead wife. Mattie is torn between her own goals and desire to become a writer and her promises and commitments to her dead mother and her family.

It is a very good book, and I would recommend it to serious girls or history lovers.
